Hello dear St. Paul’s family!

I hope you are doing well and finding ease. My name is justine lee hooper (née Stephens), and some of you may remember me and my sister Holli, who sang and learned in St. Paul’s chorister program from mid 2000s-mid 2010s. I also played the flute on many Mid-Day Music programs.

These days, I am elated to share that I am still singing and playing my flute! I am the flutist in queer and trans NYC salsa band Las Mariquitas, which was recently recognized in Rolling Stone, and I also perform solo meditations invoking the vast interdisciplinary repertoire and legacy of Black creatives, including samples and improvisations using looped electronic and percussive figures.

I’m very grateful and fulfilled to be making ends meet as a full-time artist, and today, I am reaching out for your help. Due to the nature of my constant performance schedule, my flute is in poor condition, and I am in need of a costly repair that I can’t afford on my own. I am thrilled to be invited to perform at Lincoln Center on Thursday, November 9 (supporting stefa marin alarcon, and to which you are all welcome!), and I am wishing to be able to get my flute repaired before then. I’ve begun an online fundraiser, and I am writing in hopes that you’d be able to help support my goals either with a monetary donation and/or by sharing with your networks. I deeply value your care and support, and I hope to be able to connect with you as well!

With peace,

justine
