Invitation to the Living Buddha, Living Christ Sangha
Ever been curious about Buddhist thought? Acquainted with it already but want to learn more? In either case, you’re invited to join the Living Buddha, Living Christ Sangha, a monthly reading group at St. Paul's where we'll explore the intersection of Buddhist and Christian thought.
The group will meet on the first Saturday of the month at 3 pm in the Guild Room.
The goal is to create a welcoming and contemplative space where participants can deepen their understanding of both traditions and foster a greater sense of compassion, wisdom, and love.
The gathering, led by St. Paul’s parishioners, is named after one of Thich Nhat Hanh’s notable books, Living Buddha, Living Christ, because it so aptly describes what the group strives to be about. His book shows that the Buddha and Christ can be seen as kindred spirits, both embodying the principles of wisdom, compassion, and peace. His wisdom is simple and straightforward. Poetically expressed yet profound.
It is also the first book the group will be discussing. The 20th Anniversary edition book is available through fellow parishioner, Nikkya Hargrove’s bookstore or online at https://obodoserendipitybooks.com/books.
*What is a Sangha?*
In the Buddhist tradition, a sangha is a community of practitioners who come together to support one another on their spiritual journeys. A sangha provides a nurturing environment where individuals can share their experiences, learn from one another, and cultivate a sense of connection and belonging.
A Space for Contemplation and Discussion
In the Living Buddha, Living Christ Sangha, plan to come together to discuss books, essays and other readings to explore the intersection of Buddhist and Christian thought. Some may emphasize more of one than the other. In any case, our discussions will be guided by a spirit of curiosity, openness, and respect, and will provide a safe space for participants to share their thoughts, questions, and insights.
Why Buddhist-Christian Dialogue Matters
In today's world, we face many challenges that require a deep understanding of ourselves, others, and the world around us. By exploring the wisdom of both Buddhist and Christian traditions, we can gain valuable insights into the nature of suffering, the importance of compassion, and the path to inner peace and transformation.
What to Expect
During monthly meetings, there will be discussions based on a selected book, passages from specific books, or essays. Engage in guided discussions, share thoughts and reflections, and cultivate a sense of community and connection. There will be time for group meditation as well.
All are Welcome!
You are invited to join this journey of exploration and discovery. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner of Buddhism or Christianity, or simply curious about the intersection of these two traditions, you are welcome in the Living Buddha, Living Christ Sangha.
When & Where
The group will met on the first Saturday of the month at 3pm in the Guild Room.
Currently the group is reading Paul F. Knitter’s book,
Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian.
The Christian Century writes, “Paul F. Knitter, the distinguished and blessedly maverick Catholic theologian, has had many lives. And more than one religion. His devotional life is now a double one—or, as he calls it, a hybrid. Although getting there took him over a rough path, his reward is a deep inner satisfaction that he wants to share, and in this book about his spiritual journey, he reveals himself to be an unusually honest teacher and guide.”
After the discussion, spend time together meditating and supporting one another with regard to our individual mindfulness practices.
