Director of Music

St. Paul’s on the Green, an Episcopal church in Norwalk, CT, seeks a full-time Director of Music. Salary and full benefits are offered in adherence to AGO guidelines and commensurate with experience.  We are a progressive, diverse parish of the Episcopal Church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition that offers a radical welcome to all and holds liturgy and music at the center of its vibrant life. Situated in the heart of Norwalk, CT, St. Paul’s is conveniently located in Fairfield County, within the greater New York City metropolitan area and in close proximity to the New York and New Haven music communities.

The choral program at St. Paul’s is large and strong. The choirs of St. Paul’s sing yearly under the direction of Dr. Barry Rose, OBE at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue and have completed three recent tours to the United Kingdom. They have been invited to sing Sunday services at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue in April 2016, and have also been invited to sing Evensong with the choir of St. Paul’s, Fairfield, CT as part of the Association of Anglican Musicians 50th Anniversary conference this summer.

The St. Paul’s organ contains 3 manuals and 53 ranks and was rebuilt by Reuter in 2007 from a smaller 1928 E. M. Skinner instrument.

Reporting to the Rector, the Director of Music is a key member of the parish staff. S/he plans and oversees the entire music program, rehearses and conducts several choral ensembles, and plays for a multitude of varied services and events each year. S/he is supported by and provides supervision to a part-time Organ Scholar, who is typically a student at the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music. S/he also works collaboratively with the clergy and other staff of St. Paul’s.

As part of his/her duties, the Director of Music serves as Artistic Director of Seabury Academy of Music and the Arts, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization in residence at St. Paul’s that administers the St. Paul’s chorister program, a seasonal Mid-day Music & Concert series, a week-long Exploring Music and the Arts summer day camp, and ARTWorks, a gallery that is housed at St. Paul’s and features a changing series of art exhibitions.

St. Paul’s is currently accepting applications through January 31, 2016. Please send a cover letter and resume to Nicholas Lang, Rector of St. Paul’s, at: directorofmusicsearch@stpaulsnorwalk.org. Any questions about the position can also be sent to directorofmusicsearch@stpaulsnorwalk.org.
