6:30pm Advent Evening Book Discussion

November 29, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, repeating until December 20, 2016

Preparing the way for Jesus, John the Baptist preached beside the River Jordan and declared the importance of the repentance of sin. In Advent, then, we not only stand-your-ground-bookcoverprepare for the Christ Child to be born, but follow John the Baptist’s call to repent of what is evil in ourselves and in the larger society.

This Advent, we will focus on the racism that continues to plague American culture and society by reading Kelly Brown Douglas’ book Stand Your Ground: Black Bodies and the Justice of God. Brown Douglas is Professor of Religion at Goucher College in Baltimore, MD and Theologian-in-Residence at Washington National Cathedral, and her work challenges us to see the white supremacy and the oppression of black bodies that still persists in this country.

Book study sessions will take place on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM in the Guild Room following Advent Evening Prayer at 6:00 PM in the Lady Chapel:

Tuesday, November 29           Introduction & Chapter 1
Tuesday, December 6             Chapter 2
Tuesday, December 13           Chapter 3, Excursus & Chapter 4
Tuesday, December 20           Chapter 5, Chapter 6 & Epilogue
