Donna’s Story

Sometimes you are given exactly what you need but you are not aware of it.

I was an occasional participant in the Wednesday mid-week service at St. Paul’s before COVID. An older parishioner who routinely attended this service was invited to try the service again as protocols were in place for a limited group to be in attendance. She wanted to go but was a little concerned with her mobility of not having someone beside her walking up the path and steps into the church. I promised her I would be at the service early to make certain she had someone to walk with.

We made it into church and she was emotional about being back in that sacred space after more than six months. Of course I stayed to attend the service as well. The service was lovely and very special because these folks in attendance were back to a service that they love and clearly missed. Prepackaged communion wafers were distributed, again wonderful to be able to receive it. After the service Father Daniel asked if anyone wanted consecrated wafers to take home for Sunday’s on-line Eucharist. He would be standing outside to distribute them.

We were all outside having great conversations most of which pertained to how happy it was to see and talk to one another face to face. Father Daniel handed two prepacked wafers to everyone including me. Or so I thought.

Later that afternoon I stopped at my best friend’s house as I had promised. She and her two sisters live together. She enquired as to what I had done today and I told her about going to that special service at church. In our conversation she brought up the fact that she missed the ability to attend a service but especially that she hadn’t had communion in over six months. Her sisters were in agreement with her. Remembering the wafers, I went to my bag and told them that I would only be able to give two of them communion but was delighted to see I was actually provided three of them, the right amount I needed.
